The design for the free field gymnasium in Ahrensburg as a cooperation of urban environments architects & Stufe4 - (Mark Mückenheim and Frank Zeising) is mainly developed under strong consideration of economic aspects. The resulting building with very low construction and maintenance expenses, is extremely efficient, but also aesthetically appealing.

The building is conceived in two layers: A massive single-story base (build in masonry as requested by the client) that houses all necessary functions of the spatial program. Due to the single story concept of the design, the base is barrier-free. On this base a glass and metal constructed rig is assembled as the second layer providing the necessary space for the void of the hall area. The rig provides the possibility to use natural lighting and ventilation for the sports-hall.

Around the rig there is a fixed sunscreen consisting of a synthetic textile that is put in front of the requested overhanging roof. The very cost effective sunscreen is also protecting the glass façade of the gymnasium. At night the light emissions are minimized and the hall will have a very interesting light glow. From the inside of the gymnasium, the screen provides a constant light distribution. The textile of the sunscreen can be printed on the outside. Our proposal of an abstract pattern, designed by a local artist, will blend the building with its surrounding trees making it more reconcilable with its suburban environment.
